Modern Maid is now owned by the Maytag Corporation. It was a manufacturer of electric and gas cooking appliances. Although they are not being produced any longer there are still many of their appliances installed in homes. In addition, there are some used Modern Maid ovens and stoves that are available through private sellers It was in the 1950s that Modern Maid first came to exist. It was born of the successful Tennessee Stove Company. Their stoves date back to 1904. The company remained in the family over the years until 1961 when L. Caldwell became the company's president. The company took on the name of Modern Maid in 1965. The progressing years brought growth to Modern Maid, with the addition of microwave ovens and dishwashers to its product lines. The Tennessee Stove Company started producing coal and wood heaters and stoves in 1904. At the end of the Second World War the Tennessee Stove Company began producing electric stoves. During the 1950s their ranges began to become known as Modern Maid, and the company started using the name in 1965. In 1972 the company merged with another company and in 1979 Raytheon bought them out. After numerous other changes in ownership, in 2006 Whirlpool bought Modern Maid.

Modern Maid refrigerators are no longer being manufactured and the name is part of the Whirlpool Corporation group. Up until 1980, Modern Maid manufactured an appliance that was known as the Cook and Clean Centre which combined an electric oven and cook top with a dishwasher.
